Where can Asbestos be found?
A good indicator of whether the building in question contains asbestos would be its age. Buildings built before the 1990s (particularly 1900’s to 1950’s) would be highly suspect. Asbestos was often used in the creation of insulation, tiles, mixed with cement and woven into a fabric. It is most commonly found in insulation materials that surround boilers, pipes, ducts, fireplaces, vinyl/asphalt floor tiles, vinyl sheet rubber, acoustic ceiling tiles, vinyl wallpaper, corrugated asbestos sheets, asbestos flat sheet, asbesto lumber, wall coating, and spray coating. However, keep in mind that asbestos was used in a variety of building materials, and may be difficult to visually see if asbestos is present. The only way to be certain that asbestos is present is to have it tested by a professional.
In most cases, exposure occurs when an asbestos-containing product has been disturbed. This causes the release of asbestos fibers into the air, which can then be easily inhaled, getting trapped in the lungs. These fibers cause scarring of the lung tissue, inflammation, breathing difficulties, and cancer. Individuals may not even be aware that they have been exposed as it may take several years before symptoms present itself, and then it can take anywhere from 5 to 25 years for a person to die from exposure. With this in mind, we highly recommend that removal of all asbestos is done by certified personnel. This is an extremely dangerous job, one that should only be handled by individuals who are extremely knowledgeable about asbestos abatement, procedures, and have the proper equipment and PPE.
